Signs You Need Ignition Repair

1. You have to jiggle the key

If starting the car has become a technique you have perfected, the wafers inside the cylinder are worn. It works today because you have learned to compensate. That margin is shrinking.

2. The key sticks or will not come out

A key that refuses to return to the off position, or will not release, usually means a binding cylinder or a worn key. Forcing it is how keys snap off inside — a much bigger job than the repair would have been.

3. The key turns but nothing happens

Free rotation with no dashboard response often means the cylinder has separated internally from the switch. At that point the car will not start again until it is repaired.

4. Intermittent starting with a healthy battery

If the lights are strong and the battery has been tested, but the car sometimes acts completely dead, the ignition switch is a prime suspect — especially if wiggling the key changes anything.

5. Your keyring is heavy

This is a cause, not a symptom. A loaded keyring hangs off the cylinder and accelerates wear every time you drive. Split your car key onto its own small ring — free, and it adds years.
